Waking Up in a Foreign Country

Yesterday was a day of firsts for many, first plane ride, first time away from family, first stamp in a passport. And for many today is their first day waking up in a foreign country.

As stressful as air travel can be our flights yesterday will be remembered more for the lighter moments...Desiree, Julia, and Tajah with their faces pressed against the windows watching the takeoff for their first flight; Tajah laughing when he realized the clouds were below him; Eric almost falling over sleeping on his tray table; all of the kids gasping in unison when the plane did a little dip coming into San Jose (that one entertained the whole plane).

Our hotel is an interesting combination of several buildings with interior seating areas that feel like they are outside, twisting pathways that have confused many of us, a nice outside courtyard, and a quaint little restaurant. Last evening we went for a walk around the neighborhood before dinner and it was just amazing seeing the kids react to things. I don't want to sound jaded because I have visited here before and the surrounding mountains are still breathtaking, but for me the best part is watching the kids see all of these things for the first time. They were confronted by levels of poverty they had never seen before and also by the beauty of the area. It was a difficult contrast for many.

The weather is great, around 86 and sunny when we landed and after the sun went down it cooled off enough to throw on a sweathshirt. After dinner it was quite obvious the kids were definately sufferring from some jet lag because about 8:30 last night most either wanted to go to bed or were already in bed! Personally as soon as we got some posts and pictures on the blog and the kids were all in their rooms, I PASSED out!

  1. Hey Wilds,
Sounds like a great start to the adventure. The students are already showing signs of expanding their understanding of the place and people. Hope you all enjoy the rest of the show...

    Keep us posted,
